Sonequa Martin-Green (born 21 March 1985; age 33) is an American actress who plays Commander Michael Burnham, the lead in Star Trek: Discovery. Martin-Green's casting was officially announced on 3 April 2017 [1], although earlier news stories had suggested her casting; these had given the character the name Rainsford. [2]

She is best known for playing Sasha Williams on AMC's comic book TV adaptation of The Walking Dead (costarring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kenric Green, and guest starring Denise Crosby), and Tamara on ABC's Once Upon a Time (also starring Jennifer Morrison).

Martin-Green has said she wasn't a Star Trek fan growing up, though she was aware of how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. convinced Nichelle Nichols to stay on the original series. [3]

Martin-Green won a Saturn Award for her performance as Burnham at the 2018 ceremony. [4]

Martin-Green is married to fellow actor, and Discovery season 2 castmember, Kenric Green.
