A shoeshine boy or shoeshiner was an Earth term used to describe someone who cleaned the shoes of wealthier folk. On Augris' homeworld, the equivalent term was shoeblack.

During Benjamin Sisko's vision of 1950s America, Jimmy suggested that people of color would never get into space except as shoe shiners.

Douglas Pabst and Kay Eaton discussed making the end of Benny Russell's story a dream, with Kay saying that it would mean something for "someone without a lot of hope. A shoeshine boy, a convict, someone dreaming of a better future." (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

While creating a comedic diversion to let Darod escape from the Mokra Order soldiers, Caylem impersonated a shoeblack and cleaned the boots of Augris with a piece of fabric. (VOY: "Resistance")
