The High Sheriff of Nottingham was a character from Human mythology. Living in 12th century England, he was the chief law enforcement officer in the region around Nottingham and lived in Nottingham Castle. He was the adversary of Robin Hood, the leader of the Merry Men. As a result of the principles and actions of Robin Hood, he was viewed by the High Sheriff of Nottingham and Sir Guy of Gisbourne as being guilty of outlawry and treason and, as a consequence, they were constantly attempting to foil Robin Hood.

In 2367, the entity known as Q transported the senior officers of the USS Enterprise-D into a recreation of Sherwood Forest and the story of Robin Hood in an attempt to teach Captain Picard a lesson about love. During the reenactment each of the officers played the part of one of the Merry Men. The role of the High Sheriff of Nottingham was played by Q himself. (TNG: "Qpid")

Although the character is commonly known as the Sheriff of Nottingham, the script and the episode identified this character as the High Sheriff of Nottingham. The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 486) identified this character as the "Lord High Sheriff of Nottingham".
