The scouter gig is a small motorboat the was carried aboard the Federation starship Enterprise in the 2260s. This craft was stowed aboard in case Enterprise ever needed to disembark crew to explore oceanic terrain.
The gig was used for search operations in 2269 when the aquashuttle was destroyed, leaving Kirk and Spock missing. (TAS:"The Ambergris Element")
