His first feature film was the comedy Smokey and the Bandit (1977, with Paul Williams and Paul Sorensen. Later he appeared in the film Parasite (1982, with Tom Villard). Thomson's well known appearance came in the cult comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982, with Ray Walston, Vincent Schiavelli, and Hallie Todd) and he starred in Frightmare (1983, with Jeffrey Combs), Johnny Dangerously (1984, with Ray Walston, Joe Piscopo, and Vincent Schiavelli), and Ghoulies (1985).
Thomson played Chad Copeland in the comedy Police Academy (1984, with David Graf and Kim Cattrall), and its sequels Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986, with David Graf, Arthur Batanides, and Brian Tochi) and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987, with David Graf and Brian Tochi).

Hooker (with William Shatner and Richard Herd and directed by Cliff Bole), Hunter (1989, with Fionnula Flanagan, Alan Scarfe, and Nicholas Guest), Parker Lewis Can't Lose (1990, with Sherman Howard and Clyde Kusatsu), The Cosby Mysteries (1994, with Zach Grenier), Big Love (2009, with Robert Beltran, Miriam Flynn, Noa Tishby, and Time Winters), and Ghost Whisperer (2009, with Kelli Kirkland).
More recently he had a guest part in an episode of True Blood (2010, with Kristin Bauer and Gregg Daniel) and appeared in the comedy Vamps (2011, with Wallace Shawn and Malcolm McDowell) and the horror film Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation (2012, with Jeffrey Combs and Rhonda Aldrich).
