Riker's leg scan

A scan of Riker's leg, highlighting the sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve was one of the largest nerves in the Human body, running from the pelvis to the back of the knee.

In 2365, Commander Riker was infected with Surata IV microbes, which invaded his nervous system starting from his sciatic nerve. The contagion was neutralized only with unconventional neural therapy by Dr. Pulaski and Counselor Troi. (TNG: "Shades of Gray")

In 2370, as Geordi La Forge operated the interface probe in his interface suit, the condition of this nerve was measured by the sciatic sensor. Results from these measurements were displayed on the "Neural Sensor Analysis 7769-011". (TNG: "Interface")

In 2372, Samantha Wildman suffered lower back pain because her unborn child was putting pressure on her sciatic nerve. She found it uncomfortable to sit down for long periods, so The Doctor suggested she elevate her legs when she sat to relieve the pain. Kes suggested she take a day off to rest, but after learning that this was Wildman's first pregnancy, he assured her that it came with discomfort and she'd have to get used to it. He then told Kes that if upon Wildman's return for a follow-up two days hence, her pain persisted, they would try to decrease the nerve's sensitivity. (VOY: "Tattoo")
