Sand is a naturally-occurring granular material comprised of finely divided rock and mineral particles.

Ensign D'Vana Tendi was unfamiliar with sand before 2380, when she encountered it in a holographic recreation of a Hawaiian beach. Ensign Brad Boimler complained that sand "gets everywhere" and gave him a rash. (LD: "Second Contact")
