In the alternate reality, the San Francisco Metropolitan Area was a region of Earth, organized in Earth Sector 2.
In 2259, a wall-mounted display in Admiral Marcus' office showed, among other things, a 2 News weather report for the area. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
A different part of the graphic also showed an activity map of part of San Francisco and the bay, which it seemingly labeled "Earth Sectors 45 to 49". Its unclear how this can be reconciled with the area being covered in an Earth Sector 2 weather report (at least if we assume the area actually included San Francisco).
In the real world, the San Francisco Bay Area Combined Statistical Area, the closest equivalent of this area, was the designation given to twelve counties that share a border with the San Francisco Bay or are connected economically by the Office of Management and Budget.
In the script for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the name San Francisco Bay Area was used to describe San Francisco and the surrounding environs. [1]
