The Sakharov was a holographic representation of the real Sakharov. Like its real world couterpart, it was attached to the USS Enterprise-D.

This ship was used in the progam Picard Delta One, which was a program created by Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 2369 to fool the sentient hologram James Moriarty. Moriarty believed he and the Countess Regina Bartholomew were on board the real Enterprise-D and were given a real shuttlecraft to explore the cosmos together. In reality, their programs were confined to a small holographic data cube which simulated an entire universe for the two to explore. (TNG: "Ship in a Bottle")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 226), a type 6 shuttlecraft named Justman was filmed on the stage; however, for the launching and flight of the shuttle, stock footage of the Sakharov was used.
