Crew of the SS Valiant.

UnnamedEdit

Captain Edit

After the Valiant made contact with the galactic barrier circa 2065, its captain repeatedly requested that the ship's computer provide any and all information on ESP in Human beings. His requests became more frantic until eventually he gave the order to self-destruct. This information was recorded on the Valiant's disaster recorder, recovered by the USS Enterprise two hundred years later.

When James T. Kirk and Spock were later discussing what to do about Gary Mitchell, Kirk criticized Spock's suggestion that they kill Mitchell while they were still able to as being callous and unfeeling. Spock then reminded Kirk that the Valiant's captain likely struggled with the same dilemma, ultimately causing him to wait too long in a vain attempt to preserve the lives of his crew; something the Vulcan felt Kirk was already aware of, but didn't want to admit. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

The TNG novel The Valiant gives his name as Carlos Tarasco (β).
