The SS Valiant was a 21st century Earth starship, one of if not the first to embark on a mission of deep space exploration, in 2065, only two years after the invention of warp drive.

In that same year the Valiant encountered a magnetic storm that overwhelmed her impulse engines, and swept the vessel towards the edge of the galaxy into the galactic barrier. About a half light year outside, the ship had encountered an unknown force. It caused severe damage, and was initially thought to have caused the death of seven crewmen. One was successfully revived. Shortly thereafter, the crewman was discovered to have developed advanced capabilities via extrasensory perception. As the individual became dangerous, the captain was forced to activate the ship's auto-destruct.

In 2265, the recorder marker ejected from the Valiant, just prior to its destruction, was discovered by the USS Enterprise. The crew was then able to discover the events that led to the ship's destruction. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

Background

The year of launch and the type of mission for the SS Valiant is stated on a viewscreen graphic in ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II". It seems to contradict the statement that Friendship 1 paved the way for all the manned missions that would follow it from Earth in 2067, although this could mean either that measures were taken, in the wake of the Valiant's loss only two years after Zefram Cochrane's initial warp flight, to more firmly regulate deep space exploration, or that the Valiant mission was independent of the United Earth Space Probe Agency, which launched Friendship 1. VOY: "Friendship One" A model of the Valiant was was built by Greg Jein for the first edition of the Star Trek Chronology (1993). It is marked with the registry number ADC-11031.
