Robin Hood was the name of a character in Human mythology, who was the leader of the Merry Men in an area of England known as Sherwood Forest. According to legend he stole from the rich to feed the poor while always staying one step ahead of his archenemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham. He is perhaps most famous for his courageous attempt to rescue his beloved Maid Marian from Nottingham Castle where she was being forced to marry Sir Guy of Gisbourne.

When James T. Kirk and Spock arrived on Earth in the United States of America of 1930 via the Guardian of Forever, Kirk stole clothes from a fire escape to aid in their disguise, jokingly stating that they would "steal from the rich and give back to the poor – later." (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

When Kirk and Spock traveled back in time to 1986, Doctor Gillian Taylor addressed them as Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In 2367, the entity known as Q transported the senior officers of the USS Enterprise-D into a recreation of Sherwood Forest and the story of Robin Hood in an attempt to teach Captain Picard a lesson about love. During the reenactment each of the officers played the part of one of the Merry Men. The role of Robin Hood was played by Picard who had to choose whether to let Maid Marian (Vash) die or risk his crew's lives trying to rescue her. (TNG: "Qpid")

In 2373, Benjamin Sisko said that Michael Eddington saw himself as Valjean or Robin Hood, generally speaking a hero fighting for a noble cause. (DS9: "For the Uniform")
