Lieutenant Robert Tomlinson was a male Human Starfleet officer in the 23rd century. He served in the command division aboard the USS Enterprise in 2266 under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, during the historic five-year mission. He was one of the ship's phaser specialists and was assigned to the forward phaser control room.

That same year, Tomlinson was engaged to be married to Angela Martine, a fellow Enterprise crewmember. The wedding ceremony was interrupted, however, when the Enterprise went to condition red upon news of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey attacking Outpost 4, necessitating all crewmembers reporting to battle stations. Later, Tomlinson was left as the only crewmember in the phaser room, when all others assigned there were injured due to radiation burns, although he was later supplemented by Lieutenant Stiles. Later, as Tomlinson and Stiles were working at the controls, a phaser coolant leak incapacitated both of them in the midst of another Romulan attack. Although Lieutenant Commander Spock was able to pull them both from the phaser room, Tomlinson succumbed to his injuries and died, the only Starfleet casualty of the conflict. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

Robert Tomlinson was played by Stephen Mines.
In stage directions from the revised final draft script of "Balance of Terror", the fact Tomlinson remains standing while Martine kneels during their wedding was said to be done in accordance with "his beliefs."
Simon Pegg stated that the names of two particular crewmembers killed by Krall in Star Trek Beyond were taken from "Balance of Terror", Martine and Tomlinson. [1]
