He directed episodes for such series as The Twilight Zone, The Untouchables, Dr. Kildare, Mission: Impossible, and Hawaii Five-O. He also directed TOS actor George Takei (in a small role) in the 1966 film, An American Dream.
Gist was also an actor, appearing in such classic and popular films as 1947's Miracle on 34th Street (also featuring Jeff Corey), Alfred Hitchcock's 1951 masterpiece Strangers on a Train, the 1952 film-noir Angel Face (starring Jean Simmons and Kenneth Tobey), the 1953 musical The Band Wagon (also featuring Julie Newmar), and the 1959 war comedy Operation Petticoat (with Madlyn Rhue). Other films in which he appeared include 1949's Jigsaw (with Marc Lawrence) and Scene of the Crime (with Norman Lloyd), 1958's The Naked and the Dead (with William Campbell and Grace Lee Whitney), and the 1959 gangster biopic Al Capone (co-starring James Gregory, Nehemiah Persoff, and Ron Soble). He also appeared in episodes of Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Have Gun - Will Travel, and Peter Gunn, and even had a regular role on the series Hennesy (co-starring Meg Wyllie).
