He was the son of Jack Dawn, most notable for creating the make-ups for many classic studio era films, such as The Wizard of Oz (1939, featuring Billy Curtis), Ninotchka (1939) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Also, Dawn was the brother of Wes Dawn and the father of Jeff Dawn, whom both worked as makeup artists on Star Trek feature films.
