- The project was inadvertently revealed with the release of the previous Mirror Universe novel, The Sorrows of Empire, when it was featured as one of Mack's forthcoming projects. It had been expected that the story would have been approved by the release of that novel, but editorial reorganization at Simon & Schuster, among other factors, had prevented that, and the reference was missed in final editing. The project was ultimately approved and contracted in April 2010, being announced as the January 2012 release in Star Trek Magazine issue 154. Delays to the New Frontier novel, Blind Man's Bluff, brought the release date forward.
