A riot was a violent form of protest against a government or other form of authority. A riot caused by ethnic tensions was called a race riot.

In 2152, when Hoshi Sato was temporarily in charge of the Enterprise's galley and got obsessed with preparing a traditional oden, crewman Cunningham remarked that if they didn't serve anything soon they'd be faced with a riot. (ENT: "Singularity")

In 2366, after Roga Danar had attacked the Lunar V penal colony, hundreds of prisoners rioted and several escaped along with Danar to Angosia III. (TNG: "The Hunted")

Later that year, according to Alexana Devos, the about five-thousand Ansata sympathizers on Rutia IV were involved in various pro-Ansata activities, including occasional riots. (TNG: "The High Ground")

By early 2370, religious riots were spreading throughout the Southern islands of Bajor. (DS9: "The Homecoming")

In 2371, Gul Dukat came aboard Deep Space 9 as he had received a distress call about a riot of the Bajoran workers aboard Terok Nor from an old counter-insurgency program. (DS9: "Civil Defense")

The next year, President of the United Federation of Planets Jaresh-Inyo commented to Captain Sisko, that if he tried to remove Starfleet troops from the streets of Earth after an alleged Dominion sabotage of Earth's global power grid over Admiral Leyton's objections, he would have a planetwide riot on his hands. (DS9: "Paradise Lost")

In 2375, after Tom Paris had been imprisoned aboard the USS Voyager, he sarcastically told Neelix that Captain Janeway would have a "full-blown prison riot" if his treatment didn't get better. (VOY: "Thirty Days")
