Cardinal Richelieu of France was the antagonist of Alexandre Dumas's "The Three Musketeers". When his romantic advances were rejected by the Queen, the cardinal turned against her by becoming her strongest opponent. The Musketeers and D'Artagnan were loyal servants of the Queen.

In 2266, Sulu, under the influence of polywater intoxication, believing himself to be a 18th century swashbuckler, confronted two crewmembers in a corridor. In his state, he believed that they were Richelieu. He challenged them; they choose to leave and report the incident. Later, confronted by Captain Kirk. Sulu exclaimed "Richelieu, at last" and that he fought for "honor, Queen and France." (TOS: "The Naked Time")
