Richard Wright was an African-American novelist in the early 20th century. In 1940, he wrote Native Son about the racial inequality and social injustice of the United States.
When Benny Russell was told that that the world wasn't ready to hear that one of the Incredible Tales writers was a Negro, he mentioned Wright, along with W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes Ralph Ellison and Zora Neale Hurston, as examples of such writers. Russell specifically mentioned Native Son as an example of Negro work. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")
