Richard Widmark was a popular 20th century actor.

In 1960, he appeared in the movie The Alamo, which depicted the Battle of the Alamo, and where he played the role of Jim Bowie.

When approached by Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien about "The Alamo", Vic Fontaine recalled Richard Widmark having a role in the film. (DS9: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")

The reference to Widmark was the only indirect reference made to Bowie throughout all of the collective Alamo references made on DS9. Nevertheless, this implies that Bowie played a role in the battle.
