Richard I (aka Richard the Lionheart or Coeur de Lion) was a 12th century King of England on Earth, defeated in battle with the Kurdish Muslim general Saladin during the Crusades, who considered him a worthy foe.
Marla McGivers adored men like Richard I and kept a painting of him in her quarters aboard the USS Enterprise. When Khan visited her quarters in 2267, he recognized Richard among her art collection of "bold men from the past." (TOS: "Space Seed")
Star Trek: The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart portrayed Richard the Lionheart in Mel Brooks' 1993 comedy, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, which was in fact a parody of Sean Connery's performance as Richard in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).
