A revolver.
A revolver was a hand-held projectile firearm using a chemical reaction to propel a lead bullet. Revolvers are characterized as handguns and derive their name from a rotating cylinder that moves the next loaded chamber into firing position when the hammer is moved back to the cocked position.
Sulu and Kirk both fired a .38 police special, a type of revolver on the Shore Leave Planet. (TOS: "Shore Leave")
