Commodore was the lowest flag officer rank, above captain but below rear admiral.

A Starfleet insignia denoting the rank of commodore was used on the Starfleet uniforms of the 2140s-early 2160s. (ENT: "First Flight", "Shockwave, Part II")

In 2364, several commodores issued commands in mission orders to starship captains. These orders were read by Lieutenant Commander Data in the android's investigation into a suspected conspiracy among the higher members of Starfleet Command. (TNG: "Conspiracy", okudagram)

In 2366, Geordi La Forge sarcastically referred to his Romulan captor, Centurion Bochra, as "commodore," to which Bochra eventually corrected La Forge as to his proper name and title. (TNG: "The Enemy")

According to deleted lines from the script, upon learning Bochra's name, La Forge quipped, "And you're a centurion. Well, stay with it, you'll be a commodore someday."

Commodore Oh served as director of Starfleet Security in 2399. (PIC: "Maps and Legends").

In 2401, Commodore La Forge was the curator of the Fleet Museum. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

Background information[]

The first mention and appearance of the rank of commodore in Star Trek: The Original Series occurred in "Court Martial".

Robert Blackman's production notes during Star Trek: The Next Generation described this rank as "1 star commodore" (with admirals being "2 star" through "5 star"), though it is the only flag rank with no insignia described or depicted. [1](X)

The Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 209-211) labeled this rank as "commodore" referring to the 2250s-early 2270s and late 2270's-2350's uniforms, and "admiral, one star" referring to its use on 2350s-2370s, late 2360s-early 2370s, and 2370s uniforms.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Journal (p. 35) depicted a 2360s commodore's rank insignia as five gold pips.

A Star Trek: The Magazine article on commodores suggested that "a commodore was essentially a senior captain," and that the rank had "become defunct" in the 24th century, as it had in the United States Navy. (Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 2, Issue 5, p. 91) A later article on Starfleet rank insignia (2270s-2340s) mistakenly depicts this insignia as a silver circle with a single gold arrow pointing to the center. (Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 2, Issue 10, p. 99)

In the final scenes of PIC: "The Last Generation", Beverly Crusher wore the rank insignia of a commodore despite being referenced as "admiral."

In the United States Navy, the rank of commodore has been phased out, although it is used as an honorary title for captains who commands multiple ships or installations. The rank of rear admiral lower half (RDML) is instead conferred to one star flag officer.

Apocrypha[]

In Before Dishonor, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun informs Captain Picard that, since he is in command of a group of starships, it would be proper for him to be referred to as Commodore Picard rather than Captain Picard. The rank also features prominently in the novel Imzadi, where the rank of commodore is held by a future version of Data. Benjamin Sisko is referred to as a Commodore in Sacrifice of Angels by Charlie Reynolds.

Several non-canon reference manuals, among them the Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual, describe a five collar pip commodore insignia in use during the 24th century.

Commodore is one of the ranks held by Federation admirals Aaron, Bullock, and Savar in the video game Star Trek: Conquest.

In the alternate reality-set 2013 video game Star Trek, Commodore Daniels (β) is the commander of Frontier 17 (β)'s starbase.
