In the Starfleet of the Federation, its predecessor the Earth Starfleet, the Bajoran Militia and the Klingon Defense Force, the tendency towards using the ranks equivalent to the planet Earth's naval and ground forces exists. The United States armed forces, as well as the militaries of the United Kingdom and Germany, show a good degree of influence on this system. In military and civilian service organizations of many intelligent cultures, rank (sometimes denoted by rank insignia on uniforms) is how the jobs of different personnel are organized in a hierarchy of authority.

Military ranks

In the history of several humanoid cultures, ranks have been used in naval organizations and other fighting forces. The ranking systems of Starfleet strongly resemble the United States armed forces with some of the rank pips and badges successors to United States military insignia.

Other cultures have a variety of different titles and ranks, based on different languages and social characteristics. The Bajoran Militia and the Klingon Defense Force use ranks equivalent to the planet Earth's naval and ground forces.

Standard naval ranks

Standard infantry ranks

This is a representative selection of ranks is based on several military rank structures used by various species and cultures.

This list contains links to only those ranks that have been mentioned or seen in canon Star Trek productions.

Other grades

The Star Trek Encyclopedia describes this rank as equivalent to that of "warrant officer".

Honorary ranks

An honorary rank was the rank given by Starfleet without earning it by the usual methods.

Ari bn Bem was made an honorary commander. (TAS: "Bem")

When William T. Riker first encountered Data, he asked him if his rank of Lieutenant Commander was merely honorary. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")
