Ralph Ellison was a Negro author in the 20th century.

In 1953, when Benny Russell was told that that the world was not ready to hear that one of the Incredible Tales writers was a Negro, he mentioned Ellison, along with W.E.B. DuBois, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright, as examples of such writers. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

Ralph Ellison, according to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 233), gained "prominence with his first and only novel, Invisible Man (1952). The book was the powerful story of an African-American man who traveled from the southern region of his country to a northern community called Harlem, where he fought for social justice against racial discrimination, only to be ignored by those he'd hoped to help."
