A province was an administrative region of a country, an empire, or a planet. A typical province had a local government and police who enforced laws. Within a province, there could be smaller administrative regions called districts. The wealth generated in a province was collected and distributed to the central government. In a period of civil disorder, the central government could suspend the local government and declare martial law on the province's population. (DS9: "Cardassians", "Shakaar"; VOY: "False Profits")

In 2151, on the Akaali homeworld, Riaan, when seeing T'Pol, asked Jonathan Archer if they were from the same province. He replied, "Not exactly." (ENT: "Civilization")

In 2152, communications officer Hoshi Sato retrieved from the Vulcan databanks the protocols of the Council of Physicians. According to these protocols, a person accused of ethical misconduct was entitled to a medical hearing before the ranking medical officer of a province or territory where the accusation was first made. Archer stated this protocol to Doctor Oratt, forcing him to agree to a hearing on an accusation made against T'Pol. (ENT: "Stigma")

In 2154, on Vulcan, when Koss learned that T'Pol was ill, he replied that he knew the finest doctors in the province. (ENT: "Home")

In 2268, on 892-IV, when asked by Flavius Maximus where he was from, James T. Kirk claimed that he was from another province. Later, Flavius stated that he was the most successful gladiator for seven years in the province that the USS Enterprise landing party beamed into. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")

In 2368, on Romulus, Ambassador Spock spoke to members of four provinces. These members had become aware of a movement of Romulan people who were seeking to learn the ideals of the Vulcan philosophy. (TNG: "Unification I")

In 2369, Galen compared Jean-Luc Picard, who was on a survey mission, to a "Roman centurion patrolling the provinces, maintaining a dull and bloated Empire." (TNG: "The Chase")

In 2374, in a holodeck simulation of World War II aboard the USS Voyager, the American military had to pass through a province in France to get into Germany. (VOY: "The Killing Game")

This is an inaccuracy in the simulation, as by 1944 France had abandoned its system of provinces in favor of departments for well over a century.

In the 32nd century, there was unrest in Peer N'Raj's province on Ni'Var. (DIS: "Unification III")
