Provider 1 was one of three Providers, aliens resembling disembodied brains that lived below the surface of the planet Triskelion. For pleasure these aliens captured humanoids and made them combat each other, while they wagered on the outcome. Provider 1 appeared identical to its companions save for a reddish internal radiance. Provider 1 also owned the thrall Shahna.
In 2268 the Providers captured three Enterprise crew members: James T. Kirk, Uhura, and Pavel Chekov for their stable of gladiators. Shortly after their arrival on Triskelion and demonstrations of their combat skills, Provider 1 outbid its companions, purchasing the Enterprise crewmembers for two thousand quatloos. At that time, Galt marked them, changing the crystals on their collars of obedience from white to red. Galt also warned them that further disobedience was punishable by death. (TOS: "The Gamesters of Triskelion")
