The Picard family was a predominantly French family, though it also had at least one Spanish member.

The history of this family dated back several centuries. Picard claimed the family could trace its roots back to the time of Charlemagne in the 8th century in western Europe. (TNG: "Journey's End")

When being raised, young Picards are always taught about the great Picards in their history, often to the point of feeling that they have to live up to someone's standards. Some of the more accomplished Picards include the Picard who commanded a French warship at the Battle of Trafalgar, one who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, or the ones who settled the first Martian colonies. (Star Trek Generations)

The Château Picard vineyards, located in La Barre, France, were well known for their wine production, notably for their Chateau La Barre and Chateau Picard vintages. Chateau Picard was available to the public since at least 2249. (TNG: "Family", "All Good Things..."; Star Trek Nemesis; DIS: "The Vulcan Hello")

During World War II, Château Picard was used as a base by Nazi occupiers. The Picard family managed to survive by hiding in underground tunnels, and after the war moved to England. The house lay abandoned and ruined for the next century; eventually, the Picards hired caretakers to maintain the property, but it would be generations before they took up residence there again. (PIC: "Watcher")

While Château Picard was abandoned during that time, there were Picards that lived elsewhere in France, such as Renée Picard's family at Chateauneuf-Grasse. (PIC: "Fly Me to the Moon") Not many of the Picards were explorers or space-faring people; in fact, Jean-Luc Picard was the first in the family to leave the Sol system. (Star Trek Nemesis)

The Picard line suffered a serious blow in 2371 with the deaths of Robert and his young son, René. Lamenting their deaths, Jean-Luc Picard found himself flipping through his Picard family album he kept aboard the USS Enterprise, regretting that, as he had not created a family and had already reached a relatively advanced age, there would be no more Picards. (Star Trek Generations)

Around ten years after these events, the family line was indeed unexpectedly continued by Jean-Luc with his then-lover, Beverly Crusher, resulting in the birth of Jack Crusher. Jean-Luc would not learn of this until 2401. (PIC: "Disengage", "Seventeen Seconds")

A Picard that fought at Trafalgar

The Picard family shield of arms was first featured on the Picard family album in Star Trek Generations. Its heraldic description was: quarterly, first and fourth Or a lion rampant reversed gules, second and third azure a bend sinister wavy between two estoiles Or. The shield would later be used as Picard's civilian comm pin in Star Trek: Picard.

The prop album included information on many ancient members of the family, and a family tree starting with Madame de La Barre and Françoise de Picard, and including such people as Christophe Picard, Jon Michael Picard, Picard VIII, Picard XXII, and Georges Picard. (Picard's Family Album, Star Trek Generations special features) Portraits of historic members of the Picard family (bearing a strong resemblance to Patrick Stewart) were also created for Picard's nexus experience. (The Art of Star Trek, p. 288)

While portraying the character of Guinan, Whoopi Goldberg always had a belief that Guinan was a very distantly related grandmother figure to Jean-Luc Picard. (50 Years of Star Trek)
