"There's no greater challenge than the study of philosophy."
– Jean-Luc Picard to Wesley Crusher, 2365 ("Samaritan Snare")

Philosophy refered to a culture's set of beliefs and paradigms. One who studied philosophy was known as a philosopher. A set of philosophies about a specific academic field was called a school of thought. (TNG: "Birthright, Part I")

The Ba'ku believed in their philosophy to reject technology. As Sojef put it, "We believe that when you create a machine to do the work of a man, you take something away from the man." (Star Trek: Insurrection)

In 2368, according to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, ever since the earliest wormholes were discovered, first year philosophy students were asked the question "What if one of those lives I save down there is a child who grows up to be the next Adolf Hitler or Khan Singh?" (TNG: "A Matter Of Time")

In 2369, Kira Nerys told Commander Benjamin Sisko and Keiko O'Brien that the basic teaching Keiko brought included a fundamentally different philosophy than the Bajoran philosophy. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets")
