The phaser station was a control panel for the phasers in the phaser control room. A phaser gun crew would use this console for checking the status of and, with direction from the bridge, for firing the phasers. The readiness of the phaser stations was monitored from the bridge; a green light indicated readiness.
In 2257, Lieutenant James T. Kirk was stationed to a phaser station on board the USS Farragut. When the starship was attacked by the dikironium cloud creature, Kirk delayed in firing at the creature. He blamed himself afterwards for not acting quick enough, for he believed that if he had, than two hundred lives, including that of Captain Garrovick – one of the finest men Kirk knew in his career, would not have been killed. It would not be until 2268 that Kirk, now captain of the USS Enterprise, would come to terms with the fact that there would have been no difference if he didn't delay firing. (TOS: "Obsession")
In 2266, on board the Enterprise, the navigator Lieutenant Dave Bailey, during an exercise of simulated attacks and evasive maneuvers, asked phaser station two why it wasn't showing readiness. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
