The term phase can either mean the state of matter (see Phases of Matter below), or it can mean the phase of constructs we can consider as wave in nature. For example, waves which are out-of-phase will cancel each partially or entirely (depending on their respective amplitudes) in destructive interference; waves which are in-phase means will reinforce each other in constructive interference.
