A pet was any lifeform kept for companionship and/or amusement. Some went so far as to anthropomorphize their pets, speaking to them as they would another of their species. (ENT: "Dear Doctor") Denobulans generally didn't keep pets, (ENT: "A Night in Sickbay") though Doctor Phlox was an exception. (ENT: "Doctor's Orders")
In 2155 of the mirror universe, Malcolm Reed suggested that the creature that killed Ensign Kelby might have been a pet owned by one of the original crew. Phlox disagreed, saying it was unlikely unless they owned a velociraptor. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")
Superior beings often looked upon their inferiors as pets. In 2267, Trelane's mother referred to the USS Enterprise landing party he had been tormenting as pets, saying he could not have them if he couldn't take proper care of them. (TOS: "The Squire of Gothos") Data once observed that Q regarded his relationships with Jean-Luc Picard as "that of a master and his beloved pet." (TNG: "All Good Things...") In 2372, Tanis told Kes that eventually she would regard the crew of USS Voyager as they would regard pets. Kes didn't care for the possibility, protesting, "They're not pets. They're people, they're my friends." (VOY: "Cold Fire")
In 2368, Jean-Luc Picard characterized the naming and caring for Hugh as turning the young Borg into some kind of pet. Despite this, he still planned to use the drone to carry out his plan to destroy their race. (TNG: "I Borg")
