Parachute

A parachute used in orbital skydiving

A parachute is a device that allows one to fall from an airplane or other airborne transportation without risking bodily harm. It uses wind resistance to make the fall come much slower.

After Jonathan Archer restored a damaged timeline, parachutes used by soldiers during World War II could be seen in the time stream as the timeline realigned itself. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

Orbital skydivers carry compressed parachutes in their suits, to help land safely. (VOY: "Extreme Risk"; Star Trek Generations deleted scene)

In the holosuite program Julian Bashir, Secret Agent, Julian Bashir's character had fallen from an airplane, but he fortunately happened to have a parachute with him, and he found a submarine waiting for him when he landed. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir")

This was more than likely a tip of the hat to the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, in which a nearly identical set of unbelievable circumstances occur.
