Doctor Ozaba was a Federation scientist stationed on Minara II to study Minara's development into a nova in 2268. Ozaba and his associate, Dr. Linke, were kidnapped and tortured by the Vians, who eventually killed the two scientists. The Vians' actions were an attempt to teach the empath Gem, a Minaran inhabitant, to comprehend compassion and self-sacrifice in effort to determine if her planet's inhabitants were worthy of saving from the sun's impending nova.
