Orion I was the first planet in the Orion system, location of a prestigious Institute of Cosmology. Crewman Mortimer Harren had hoped to attend the Institute of Cosmology there, and thus signed onto the USS Voyager because a year of field experience was required for admittance. The location of Orion was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. Orion was located near Vulcan, Aldebaran, and Canopus III. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. According to Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 36, this planet was located in the Orion (Pi 3 Orionis) star system. This trinary star system was located in the Beta Quadrant.
