Omekla III was the inhabited third planet in its star system. It was a Cardassian planet and the location of a shipyard.
In 2371, Thomas Riker set course for the shipyards at Omekla III after he destroyed Cardassian Outpost 47 with the stolen USS Defiant.
Riker's strategy changed after the ship was damaged by Major Kira Nerys, and the Defiant was forced to take cover in a nebula while undergoing repairs. Following the completion of repairs, the Orias system became the ship's new target. (DS9: "Defiant")
According to the script, the pronunciation for Omekla was "OH-mek-la". [1]
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 46) and the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Stellar Cartography", pp. 18-19; "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Omekla system was located in the Alpha Quadrant. The primary was an M-class star. According to a map of the Cardassian Union – prepared by an anonymous astrography clerk, from the Cardassian Central Archives, in 2364 – Omekla was identified as a Cardassian system.
