Rom, ODN recoupler — Rom using an ODN recoupler to decouple an ODN relay

An ODN relay was an important computer component utilized in an optical data network aboard starships and space stations alike during the 24th century.

While operating, ODN relays emitted noticeable vibrations. To soothe the temperamental Kirayoshi O'Brien, Chief Miles O'Brien placed his infant in the "pit" in Ops, where he fell asleep. The chief was unsure what exactly in the pit was able to put his otherwise colicky son asleep, suggesting that perhaps it was the pattern of the lights, the hum of the optronic emitters, or the vibrations of the ODN relays. On the USS Enterprise-D, there was an ODN relay linking directly from engineering to the engineering console on the bridge. There was also a relay that acted as a backup engineering computer. Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge once tried, unsuccessfully, to use the ODN relay to regain control of the Enterprise from Reginald Barclay, who had integrated his mind with the computer following an encounter with an alien probe. Control of Deep Space 9's turbolift control system could be accessed through the station's ODN relays. In said cases, an access signal was typically left behind and could generally be traced back to the source. (DS9: "Crossfire")

ODN relays aboard the station were known to blow out on occasion, a side effect caused by the mixing of Federation, Bajoran, and Cardassian technologies. (DS9: "Bar Association")

In order to disable Terok Nor's deflector array and prevent Damar from successfully taking down the minefield blocking the Bajoran wormhole, Rom needed to cut power to the computer via access to the central core. One of the final steps of the process involved decoupling the ODN relays with the use of an ODN recoupler. (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels")
