Nyota Uhura served as communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise[!] under the command of Christopher Pike and, later, James T. Kirk. Uhura had a romantic relationship with Spock.
Uhura studied and specialized in xenolinguistics at Starfleet Academy. Uhura's roommate during her stay at the Academy was Gaila, an Orion officer who apparently had a romantic and sexual interest in James T. Kirk.
Uhura was able to detect a message within Klingon territory indicating that a fleet of 47 Klingon vessels was engaging an unknown Romulan ship. She determined all of the 47 ships were lost in the battle.
Uhura was present at James T. Kirk third re-take of the Kobayashi Maru Test Scenario acting as communications officer.
Before departing for their assigned starships, Uhura was supposedly assigned to the USS Farragut before Spock re-assigned her to the USS Enterprise. Apparently her original assignment to the USS Farragut was conducted by Spock in hopes of showing no favoritism to his student at her talented skills in communications.
Aboard the Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike promoted Uhura to communications officer, because the ship's prior communications officer was not certain that he could distinguish transmissions in Romulan from transmissions in Vulcan.
