For the VOY episode, please see Non Sequitur (episode).

A non sequitur (Latin for "it does not follow") was a line of reasoning said to proceed from another, but which in reality did not make sense.

During Tom Paris and Tuvok's visit to 1996 after having gone back in time, they brought Rain Robinson a breakfast of chili burritos, foot-long hot dogs, and Goliath Gulps. Taking inventory of the meal, Robinson quipped, "This is not a breakfast, this is an afternoon at Dodger Stadium." (i.e. food you would eat at a baseball game) Tuvok, unfamiliar with the reference, classified her statement as a non sequitur. (VOY: "Future's End, Part II")

The probe Nomad referred to three claims made by James T. Kirk as non sequiturs in 2267:

a) That the crew of the USS Enterprise could not board Nomad's ship.
b) That if the crew of Nomad cared to leave their ship, the Enterprise would provide needed life support systems to accommodate them.
c) That a supposedly inferior "biological unit" created Nomad. (TOS: "The Changeling")

In the 24th century, Starfleet named one of its ships, the USS Non Sequitur, after this phrase. (TNG: "Conspiracy")
