Background information[]

This was one of the few instances of product placement being used in a Star Trek production.

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman suggested in a question-and-answer session with fans that the company Nokia might have been nationalized by the 23rd century. [1]

The real-life Nokia was consulted by Star Trek property master Russell Bobbitt for the redesign of the Star Trek: The Original Series communicator. In addition, Nokia, in conjunction with Verizon Wireless, created a marketing tie-in for Star Trek, which included the launch of a website at JoinStarfleetAcademy.com.
