Benny Russell and Albert Macklin at a newsstand

Benny Russell and Albert Macklin by a newsstand in a vision of 1950s New York City

A newsstand was a business where newspapers and magazines were sold. They were usually managed by a vendor.

A newsstand was located on a sidewalk in the Dixon Hill holo-program The Big Good-Bye, set in San Francisco in 1941. This newsstand sold copies of the San Francisco Sun, the San Francisco Herald and San Francisco Globe. While running the program for the first time in 2364, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (as the character Dixon Hill) bought a newspaper from the vendor at this stand. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

The script for "The Big Goodbye" describes this as an "open air stand" with a sign that reads "Joe's News and Magazines", although this was never shown on-screen. [1]

In 2374, Captain Benjamin Sisko experienced a vision of 1950s New York City from the Bajoran Prophets in which there was a newsstand situated on a sidewalk. Experiencing the role of science fiction author Benny Russell, Sisko purchased a copy Galaxy magazine from the vendor. Later during his vision, Sisko tried to sell a story to editor Douglas Pabst but Pabst rejected it due to the hero being a negro captain. Pabst stated that neither his publisher, the national distributors or the wholesalers would put the story on the newsstand for fear it would cause a race riot. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")
