On New Year's Eve, 1999, which was then referred to as Millennium Eve, many people believed that the arrival of the year 2000 marked the new millennium. When Henry Janeway asked Shannon O'Donnell what her plans were for 2000's Millennium Eve, she told him "No different than last year's Millennium Eve. I plan to be asleep." O'Donnell then explained her take on the Millennium Eve hype, stating "everyone was convinced it was the dawn of a new era. But when the world didn't end and the flying saucers didn't land and the Y2K bug didn't turn off a single light bulb, you'd think everybody would have realized it was a number on a calendar. But, oh, no, they had to listen to all those hucksters who told them the real millennium was 2001. So this New Year's Eve will be as boring as last year." It was then that Janeway recalled that he had "sold an awful lot of doomsday books."
It was that same year that Henry Janeway held out against the Millennium Gate representatives to sell his store, which would allow the construction of the landmark in Portage Creek, Indiana. Janeway felt that if he stood "firm 'til New Year's" he would win the battle, save his store and force the Millennium Gate project to be scrubbed. After some convincing by O'Donnell, Janeway changed his mind about the project and at a minute until midnight, on New Year's Eve, he agreed to hand over his store. (VOY: "11:59")
The New Year's Eve tradition continued to be celebrated during the 24th century. It was at a New Year's Eve party hosted by Bruce Lucier in 2367 that Elizabeth Lense confused Julian Bashir with his Andorian friend Erit. (DS9: "Explorers")
