Ned Quint was a Human male of Scots descent, native to the Federation colony, Caldos. A groundskeeper who spoke Scots language, he helped tend to Felisa Howard's affairs after her granddaughter, Beverly Crusher, left for Starfleet Academy. Felisa never mentioned Quint to Beverly, yet he spent much time at her house, complaining that he has spend more time there in the past five years, than she had in the past twenty.

Quint was aware that Ronin and the Howard family candle were dangerous, and warned both Felisa and Beverly of this fact. Beverly wanted Quint to tend to her grandmother's house after her death in 2370, but he said the house was haunted and vowed never to return. Quint was killed when he tried stopping Ronin from using the weather control system on Caldos as a means of moving about. It appeared he had been killed by a plasma surge from a console he was trying to dismantle, but residual traces of anaphasic energy made it clear Ronin was involved. (TNG: "Sub Rosa")

Quint was played by actor Shay Duffin, who was Irish, not Scottish.
He was named after valet Peter Quint in The Innocents, another story about ghostly lovers (based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw). (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (2nd ed., p. 281))
According to the script of the episode, Quint was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, which is not in the Highlands. He was described as "– a dour man in his mid-fifties with a heavy Scottish accent." [1]
