A navy was the branch military forces principally designated for lake- or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. Many traditions that originated in the early Earth-based navies were still adhered to by Starfleet in the 23rd century.
The Starfleet rank structure was the same as that used by the navy of the 20th century United States of America.
- Giving ship commanders equal quarters as admirals. (DS9: "Rapture")
