The NX-Alpha, along with the NX-Beta, was one of two test vehicles for used by Earth Starfleet's NX Program. In 2143, A.G. Robinson flew the NX-Alpha in an attempt to break the warp 2 barrier. The NX-Alpha broke up shortly after it had reached warp 2.2., though Robinson managed to escape in time using the ship's escape pod. (ENT: "First Flight")
