Music was an arrangement of vocal, instrumental or mechanical sounds organized in succession by rhythm, melody or harmony, that has the ability to evoke emotion. One who composes or plays music was known as a musician.

The Doctor described to the Quarra that "music is more than mathematics, and I am much more than a program with musical subroutines. All of my experience, all of my passion goes into every note that I sing. When you listen to me, when my singing moves you, you're not just hearing notes. You're hearing my artistry, my soul." While T'Pol was assigned to Earth, during the early half of the 22nd century, she lived at the Vulcan compound in San Francisco. On one occasion, she curious about Human recreation and wanted to see for herself, so she left the compound and walked until she heard music. She described it as "unusual, chaotic, but I was drawn to it." She recalled going into the restaurant where musicians were playing and sat at a table to listen. She later recalled, upon further listening to the music, feeling "invigorated [...] briefly", before returning to the compound. (ENT: "Fusion")

B'Elanna Torres had what was described as a limited appreciation of music limited to "a smattering of Klingon drinking songs." (VOY: "Virtuoso")
