A Monster is a legendary creature that inspires fear or horror. Often these fictional creatures turn out to be based on some scientific truth.
In some cases a first incounter with an alien can cause fear of monsters. (Star Trek: First Contact)
Many worlds have creatures that resemble Earth's sea-monsters. (TAS: "The Ambergris Element", VOY: Thirty Days)
On Earth during the holiday of Halloween people often dress as various monsters. (TOS: "Catspaw")
Charles Tucker III was a big fan of "monster movies".
Neelix would help Naomi Wildman get to sleep by searching the quarters for monsters, even such places as the replicator. (VOY: "Mortal Coil")
