Mike Hammer was a fictional portrayal of a 20th century detective on Earth. Odo recommended the Mike Hammer crime novel, Kiss Me Deadly, to Kira Nerys in 2375. Odo thought Kira would appreciate Hammer's qualities, telling her "he's as tough as they come and he hates waiting almost as much as you do". (DS9: "Shadows and Symbols")

Miles O'Brien was also familiar with Mike Hammer, as well as other crime novel detectives, such as Raymond Chandler. (DS9: "Field of Fire")

In the 1990s the character of Mike Hammer was briefly recreated for a series of comics from Tekno Comix, the same company which produced Leonard Nimoy's Primortals and Gene Roddenberry's Lost Universe.
