Mike Hammer was a fictional portrayal of a 20th century detective on Earth. Odo recommended the Mike Hammer crime novel, Kiss Me Deadly, to Kira Nerys in 2375. Odo thought Kira would appreciate Hammer's qualities, telling her "he's as tough as they come and he hates waiting almost as much as you do". (DS9: "Shadows and Symbols")

Miles O'Brien was also familiar with Mike Hammer novels, and with authors of similarly "hard-boiled" 20th century detective fiction, such as Raymond Chandler and Dixon Hill. (DS9: "Field of Fire")

Background

Mike Hammer first appeared in the novel I, the Jury, mentioned in DS9: "Profit and Loss".

In the 1990s, the character of Mike Hammer was briefly recreated for a series of comics from Tekno Comix, the same company which produced Leonard Nimoy's Primortals and Gene Roddenberry's Lost Universe.

Many Star Trek stars appeared in the short-lived Mike Hammer, Private Eye television series which ran from September 1997 to June 1998. These actors include Barry Jenner, Deborah Lacey, Steven Culp, William Lucking, Tracy Scoggins, Katherine Moffat, Cyril O'Reilly, Barry Wiggins, D. Elliot Woods, George Murdock, Richard Lynch, James Black, James Wellington, and Raye Birk.
