Mercer helped Paxton clone a Vulcan-Human baby with the stolen DNA of Trip Tucker and T'Pol. Paxton intended to use the baby to incite xenophobic reactions among humans, and then destroy the baby. Mercer, who was in charge of the baby's care, was conflicted over Paxton's plans for the baby, and discussed it with Paxton. Paxton accused him of disloyalty, but Mercer denied it.
